Henryk Grynberg studied journalism in Warsaw, after which he became an actor in the National Jewish Theatre in Warsaw. He emigrated to the USA in 1967, and for 20 years worked for the U.S. Information Agency and the Voice of America. He has won a number of literary prizes, including: the Kościelski, Borowski, Kultura, Wiadomości, Jurzykowski, Vincenzo, and the Karski and Nireńska. He was recently nominated for the NIKE prize for Memorbuch.
